It is a blend of the vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. These vines grow in very different regions in France, and the controlling french wine laws do not allow them to be blended in their native country.
However, the New World is not governed by these ancient rules, and they can try new ideas.
Once Cabernet Shiraz was introduced in the mid-1900's it quickly became a much sought-after wine.
