American Hops Origins

Hops grow in Europe for more than a thousand years, and the regional varieties which have developed there are the basis of modern types, including those imported to America.
These varieties were imported to North America early in the 17 century. Some American hop types are the result of these traditional European varieties interbreeding, both accidentally and intentionally, with wild varieties native to North America. Other American varieties developed from European stock alone. Since the 1970s, laboratory-based breeding techniques have allowed for greater control of the breeding process than traditional methods, resulting in new cultivars with significantly improved characteristics.

These hops include Amarillo, Apollo, Cascade, ChinookCitra, Mosaic and Simcoe.
