What is Bourbon Whiskey, and how does it differ from other whiskeys?

Bourbon is always whiskey, but whiskey is not always Bourbon. Bourbon has important distinctions that differentiate it from whiskey: it has to be made in the United States from at least 51% corn, be aged in new, charred American white oak barrels, and the finished product must be at least 80 proof.

Sort By:

Bourbon is a type of American barrel-aged whiskey, and the main ingredient is corn. The name originally derives from the French Bourbon dynasty.

What makes Bourbon different from whiskey?

  1. The type of grain used
  2.  Where the spirit is produced.
  3.  Bourbon is an American-made whiskey that must contain at least 51 per cent corn in its mash.
  4.  NEW, charred oak barrels must be used to age Bourbon.
  5. The mash is mainly filled with rye, wheat, and malted barley.

Is Bourbon superior to whiskey?

  1. Bourbon tastes different because it is sweeter than other whiskies such as Irish, Scotch, Canadian or Tennessee whiskey.
  2. Scotch is known to have a more intense smokiness.
  3. Scotch and Bourbon are the same in terms of nutrition.
