Hops for beer brewing have grown in Europe for over a thousand years, and the regional varieties developed there are the basis of modern types, including those imported to America.
These hop varieties were imported to North America early in the 17 century.
Some American beer brewing hop types result from these traditional European varieties cross-pollinating, both accidentally and intentionally, with wild combinations native to North America.
Other American varieties are derived only from European stock.
Since the 1970s, breeding techniques based in the laboratory have had significantly greater control of the breeding process than the earlier traditional methods, resulting in new cultivars with improved characteristics.
