New World Hops

New World Hops is the name for the new and exciting beer hops from America, New Zealand and the southern hemisphere.

The Modern "craft ale" craze, particularly in I.P.A.'s, has come about because of these new beer hops, allowing an explosion of creativity and experimentation to find new beers that make the most of these hops' fresh flavours and aromas. New world hops have meant using the term "hoppy" to describe a beer is no longer enough.

These hops are known for their bold and vibrant aromas and flavours, often characterized by intense citrus, pine, tropical fruit, and resinous qualities.

New World Hops have played a significant role in shaping the tastes of modern craft beers, particularly hop-forward styles such as India Pale Ales (I.P.A.'s).

Some prominent New World hop varieties include:

  1. Cascade: One of the most well-known American hop varieties, Cascade hops are prized for their distinct floral, citrusy, and grapefruit-like aroma. They are commonly used in a wide range of hoppy beer styles.
  2. Simcoe: Simcoe hops offer a unique combination of piney, earthy, and fruity aromas, with notes of apricot and berry. They are often used in both single-hop and multi-hop brews.
  3. Centennial: Centennial hops exhibit floral, citrus, and pine aromas. They are frequently used in I.P.A.'s and other hop-forward styles.
  4. Amarillo: Amarillo hops are known for their orange-citrus aroma with floral and tropical fruit undertones. They contribute a bright and juicy character to beers.
  5. Citra: Citra hops are famous for their intense citrus and tropical fruit aromas, including notes of lime, grapefruit, and passionfruit. They are widely used in aromatic and flavorful I.P.A.s.
  6. Mosaic: Mosaic hops are characterized by a complex aroma profile that includes berry, tropical fruit, citrus, and pine notes. They can add layers of depth to hoppy beers.
  7. Galaxy: Originally from Australia, Galaxy hops have gained popularity for their intense tropical fruit and passionfruit aromas, making them a sought-after choice for hoppy ales.
  8. El Dorado: El Dorado hops contribute a unique blend of fruity aromas, often described as watermelon, pear, and stone fruit. They can add a juicy and distinctive character to beers.

These New World hop varieties have expanded the range of flavours and aromas that brewers can incorporate into their creations, allowing for various innovative and exciting beer styles. The dynamic characteristics of these hops have contributed to the craft beer movement's exploration of new and unique flavour profiles in recent years.
