Here are some pieces of equipment you may need:

  • A siphon: A siphon is a device that uses suction to transfer liquid from one container to another. There are two main types of siphons: automatic and manual. Automatic siphons use a pump to create suction, while manual siphons use gravity.
  • Auto siphoning : An auto syphon is a device that allows you to start a syphon without sucking on the tubing. This utensil is crucial because it eliminates the risk of introducing bacteria from your mouth into the wine.
  • Wine Syphon Tube: Wine syphon tube cut to the correct length to transfer the wine from the barrel to bottle.
  • A bottling wand: The bottling wand transfers the wine from the siphon to the bottle. Using a bottling wand made from food-grade plastic or glass is essential.
  • Food-grade tubing: You'll need a length of tubing to transfer the wine from one container to another. It's vital to use food-grade tubing, as regular tubing may contain harmful chemicals that could contaminate the wine.
  • Racking cane: A racking cane is a long, rigid tube with a curved end to draw wine from one container into another.
  • Wine thief: A wine thief is a glass or plastic tube that extracts small amounts of wine from a container for testing purposes. It helps check the wine's flavour, aroma, and clarity.
  • A filter: The filter prevents sediment from being transferred to the wine. It is essential to use a fine enough filter to prevent sediment from passing through.

In addition to these essential items of siphoning, there are a few other items that can be helpful for wine syphoning:

  • A bucket: A bucket can be used to catch the sediment that is removed from the wine.
  • Sanitiser: Sanitiser can clean all items before and after use.
  • A hydrometer: A hydrometer is a device that measures the sugar content of wine. This information can determine when the wine is ready to be bottled.
  • A corker: A corker puts the corks in the bottles.

Once you have all of the necessary items for siphoning wine, you can follow these steps to syphon wine:

  1. Clean all of the items with sanitiser.
  2. Connect the syphon to the tubing and the tubing to the container of wine.
  3. Insert the bottling wand
  4. Start the syphon by pumping or releasing the valve.
  5. Allow the wine to flow into the bottling wand.
